Why your video has black bars on TikTok

Black bars appear because the video is 16:9 and the TikTok canvas is 9:16. Fitted to 1080 pixels wide, the video is 608 pixels tall inside a 1920 canvas: 1312 pixels are left over and split top and bottom. The fixes are cropping, filling or shooting vertical.

Where the two bars come from

The platform crops nothing: it places your file on a vertical canvas and scales it to fit the width. A 16:9 file scaled to 1080 pixels wide is 607.5 pixels tall, so a 1920 canvas has 1312.5 pixels left over. Since the video is centred, that leaves 656 pixels of bar at the top and 656 at the bottom.

The three ways out

FixWhat it keepsWhat it costs
Crop to 9:16The subject, full screen68% of the area is lost; you must choose the framing
Fill with a background (blur or colour)The whole original frameVisible bars and a smaller subject
Shoot verticalEverything, at native resolutionYou have to record again

Which one fits each shot

  • One person talking to camera → crop. The subject fills the vertical and nothing relevant is lost.
  • Two-person interview → crop per segment or fill; following one person can leave the answer out of frame.
  • Landscape, architecture, wide shot → fill. Cropping removes the reason for the shot.
  • Gameplay or shared screen → fill. The HUD and interface edges are information.
  • Tutorial with text on the sides → fill or reshoot; cropping cuts the text.

How to check before publishing

  1. Check the file ratio

On a phone the video details show the resolution (1920×1080, for instance). If width is larger than height, it is horizontal and will leave bars.

  2. Preview in 9:16, not 16:9

A player that respects the original ratio lies to you. Open the editor and look at the 9:16 output: that is what the platform will show.

  3. Export and check the first frame

The feed thumbnail is the first second. If bars are already there, the clip looks smaller than everything around it.

What does not fix it

  • Adding a solid colour background: the bars are still there, just a different colour.
  • Uploading at a higher resolution: the ratio does not change.
  • Posting it as a YouTube Short: the canvas is the same 9:16.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the bars on top and bottom rather than the sides?

Because a horizontal video is wider than it is tall: fitting it to the canvas width leaves height over. Side bars appear when the file is taller than 9:16, a 4:5 clip for example.

Does TikTok remove the bars automatically?

No. The platform places the file on the canvas and respects its ratio. It may offer a preview with a background, but the published file keeps its bars if it was not cropped first.

Does a video with bars look worse?

It occupies less screen, so the subject looks smaller than the rest of the feed and loses presence. File quality does not change; the space it fills does.

Can I fix it after publishing?

Not without uploading again. The ratio is in the file, so you have to crop and repost. If the video already has engagement, keep it and fix the next one.

What if I want to keep the whole frame?

Then the answer is filling: blurred background or a solid colour. You keep 100% of the image in exchange for two visible bars and a smaller subject.
